While 2020 has been anything but consistent in any arena, one person who has just kept giving the goods is Shia LaBeouf. Though the 34-year-old actor has been unable to attend any red carpet events in his Gucci-suit-and-rugby-shirt mashups, he has nonetheless been delivering first-class normcore style for the best part of the year.
And he just served another dose of off-duty garb while out for a jog (another thing he has been consistent with) in Los Angeles. Sporting a pair of Nike Dri-fit performance leggings, Hi-Tec runnners and an oversized waterproof coat by cult brand M+RC Noir, LaBeouf looked as though he could have stepped off one of Demna Gvsalia's Balenciaga or Vetements catwalks.
Normcore is characterised by its rejection of extravagance. Rather, normcorers (the ultra-stylish JFK Jr was one, FYI) purposely favour everyday items that verge on being uncool – outdoor tech-wear, chunky hiking-ready sneakers and hybrid boots – as well as brands such as Carhartt, Patagonia and The North Face.
Perhaps conversely, normcore has arguably become one of the coolest trends in menswear in recent years. The North Face has collaborated with both Supreme and Gucci, sustainable Patagonia gear is seeing a surge in popularity, while wearing your running gear all day long has been made acceptable by LaBeouf, Harry Styles and Arcteryx-wearing Frank Ocean.
Normcore has also been given the nod by the aforementioned Balençiaga and Vetements, who have made oversized technical parkas and wind cheaters collection mainstays. Meanwhile Nike's performance-heavy ACG (All Conditions Gear) division just dropped a ready-to-wear collection full of fleece joggers, Dri-fit T-shirts and windbreakers that would look as good on the street as they would on a Highlands hike.
