Q:How far apart should they be planted?

    Answer This Question

A:  According to the TAG that came with my plant: It's a DWARF plant that averages 3' high by 3' wide. Hardy in zones 7-9. Light shade to full sun. Allow 4-6 hours direct sun for best blooming. Well drained, slightly acidic soil. So plant them at LEAST 3 feet apart.

Q:I have these in containers on the patio. What do I need to do with them in the winter (Northern Virginia area)?

      Answer This Question

A:  We would recommend at least covering your plants during spells of harsh winter with a tarp or burlap. If your temperatures are going to be getting much below the recommended growing temperatures(10° or below) or going to be receiving a lot of snow/ice consider moving your plants inside a garage until the extreme weather has passed. Don't conver your plants for the entire winter - They do still need to receive sunlight and water throughout the winter to survive.

A:  When dropping below freezing, I would take to garage or inside until temperatures rise again!!!

Q:Would Encore Azalea's do well in a spot where they would be shaded for most of the winter months but get full sun during the growing/summer months?? As the sun gets higher in the sky during the summer months more sun usually reaches the area I am considering planting some azaleas, but during the winter it is mostly shaded. Since this is an evergreen I didn't know if it would be harmful to the plant to endure this much shade (even though it would require less energy production during that time)??

        Answer This Question

A:  My azaleas are planted in my front yard where it gets partial shade from a tree in the yard and partial sun and they have done fine.

        by|Jul 16, 2020

A:  We recommend at least 4-6 hours of sun per day. If you are in zone 7B+ you might be ok with this planting, if you are in a colder zone we do not think this would work. I would recommend planting just 1 in the area that you described to see if it does alright before investing in multiple plants for this location.

            Answer This Question

A:  They are hardy in zones 7-9. So probably not hardy in Massachusetts, but you could try bringing it in for the winter.

            by|Feb 12, 2020

A:  As long as you're located in USDA Zone 7a-10b, they should do fine.

                Answer This Question

A:  There is no indication on the tag that these plants are deer resistant.

                by|May 5, 2023

A:  If you search that question in the form of "do deer like azealas" on a search engine, you will find several replies that they "do indeed" like azaleas. Don't know how many deer are in your area. If only one now and then, take a chance and buy the plant...they are inexpensive. Try them for a year. If all are devoured, then try something else in the future or maybe invest in some deer repellent pellets, liquid or other tricks the Home Depot sells to deter the deer from your shrubs. Good luck.

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, they are deer resistant.

A:  Yes, all of the Encore Azaleas are Evergreen when planted in the appropriate zone. Some of our varieties may experience some shedding some of their leaves and thin during winter months to full out again full in spring
