Nephila pilipes - Golden Orb Weaver Spider The comparison between the relative sizes between the sexes of pilipes and all the other species of Nephila, is one of the most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism in nature. The female is 5x the length of the male, which makes a mass difference of around 125x.<br />

  2. Sorry, did not see that the photo after this one, you had them in the same frame as well:

    spider_pilipes_mating_crop_0747 As is often the case in the bug world, mating must be performed with extreme care. During the courtship routine, I have even seen the male tying yo the sharp end of the female, in a rather futile attempt at longevity. Many males wait until the female is feeding before climbing aboard and delivering his packet.<br />

  3. I had planned that text comment for the mating shot, but messed up.

    My system is to write all the texts for the images, in MSword, and store it, along with copies of the uploads. This helps prevent duplication, and if anything goes wrong, I still have everything.

    1. My thoughts exactly. Do a search for pilipes, and all you get is the impressive female.

      When possible, I will be posting males, for ID purposes.

"Nephila pilipes" is a species of golden orb-web spider. It resides all over countries in East and Southeast Asia as well as Oceania. It is commonly found in primary and secondary forests and gardens.
