Tulsa Shock Cut Marion Jones

The Tulsa Shock have parted ways with former Olympic gold medal winning sprinter Marion Jones.The announcement came as they waived Jones to make room for former Oklahoma Sooners center Abi Olajuwon on the roster.In 14 games with the Shock this season, Jones was averaging just under one point per game. She says through a statement that she appreciates "the opportunity to fulfill a dream" and hopes to be able to remain a contributor to women's professional basketball.As a freshman Jones was the starting point guard on the North Carolina Tar Heels' 1994 NCAA championship team, averaging 14.1 points per game. She later went on to an Olympic track and field career in which she won five gold medals at the 2000 Sydney games.She gave the medals back and served several months in prison after admitting to lying to federal investigators about using steroids.Jones was drafted in the third round of the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, but never played for the team.Tulsa is just 1-and-14 this season and will return from the All-Star break Tuesday at home against the Atlanta Dream.
