Clematis ID?

Bought a random and unnamed clematis at Tesco today - can anyone offer any idea what it might be? I think it's a Montana, is that right?

Thanks - I'm hoping it will be ok, it looks v healthy. I'd like to know the variety but I guess there's so many it may be impossible to ID it to the name.

Itd be handy to know how tall it will grow...

Looks like a Piluu clematis. Very pretty.

That looks like a very likely candidate! Happy if it's not one that wants full sun because it's in partial shade where I've put it.

They like shade over their roots. It will grow towards sun but they are fine in part shade. I have some in my pretty shady garden. I don't think that looks like a Montana though. They have smaller, rounded flowers.

I want it to grow into a tree. If it is a piilu then the RHS has them growing up to 2.5m, which will be sufficient. Fingers crossed it was a bargain that will do what I want, and not a mistake... much cheaper than getting one from a proper online nursery - which all seem to be very much sold out anyway. 🤞

No, it's definitely not a montana, which has only 4 "petals" not 6, that is, if the plant matches the label (not always the case).

The flower is one of the big flowered hybrids, summer flowering and in Group 2 for pruning.

If I'm growing a clematis into a tree I plant two one each side which bloom at different times.

It could be Bourbon as well, there are dozens of variations of the large flowered ones. Hope it does well!

Looks very like one MIL has on her patio. I texted her and hers is Ascotiensis. She also said there's one very similar called William Kennet.

We're going to have to get this DNA tested and see who's right.

I really ought to get MIL to join in. She's very knowledgeable and likes nothing better than to chat gardens.

Nelly Mosa?

Ooh, it would be handy if it was that @madroid since that one is best in part shade and grows to the right height. Fingers crossed Smile

Have a look at Ville re Lyon variety too, that's a very popular one with similar colouring. I think I've had that in a previous garden. Its similar to the Nelly Moser in its type.
