E. purpurea
is native to the southern and midwestern portions of the US where it can be found growing in open woodlands and prairies. It has stout stems and dark green leaves that very closely resemble those of Rudbeckia (black-eyed susans).

'Rubinstern' has intense, carmine-red colored blossoms with short, wide petals.

Easy to grow in rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun.

Distinctions: Plant of the Year, 1998 Perennial Plant Association; Winner of an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticulture Society; Cutflower of the Year 2006 in North America.
