World of Warcraft is currently free to play for players with lapsed subscriptions

Blizzard is hosting a welcome back weekend for WoW

World of Warcraft is currently playable without a subscription, thanks to a welcome back weekend Blizzard is hosting. First noticed in a Reddit thread — where players suspected it to be a bug — Blizzard announced that players can play WoW for free all weekend in addition to having a discount on account services.

WoWHead also reported that players who have yet to buy Legion or Battle for Azeroth have had their accounts upgraded to include Warlords of Draenor, expansion five for World of Warcraft. All of this to say that you may want to check your WoW account if you haven’t logged on in a while — you can check out the current state of the game without spending a dime.

You can play WoW all you want — on any of your characters, regardless of level — until June 24. From then on, you’ll need a subscription to continue as usual. The services sale — which includes items like appearance, faction, and race changes — is also assumed to end on Sunday.

This welcome back weekend comes just about a month and a half before Battle for Azeroth World of Warcraft’s seventh expansion — is released for Mac and Windows PC on Aug. 14.
