Horticulture Gardens Purdue University

Welcome to the Purdue University Horticulture Gardens!

We are pleased to have you visit the Purdue Horticulture Gardens. Whether you are a beginning gardener or an advanced horticulturist, our flower displays have much to offer. The gardens are a true living classroom, serving as a teaching resource for the undergraduate program in horticulture. They also provide opportunities for hands-on training of Master Gardeners, 4-H youth, and many other groups participating in workshops at Purdue. Perhaps as important, the Purdue Horticulture Gardens provide the public with a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of horticulture. Enjoy your visit and return often as the gardens are constantly changing!

Self-Guided Tour
Come on a wondrous journey that will tickle and enlighten your senses.
A special place lies before you filled with spectacular color, gentle fragrances, and an outstanding array of textures to see and feel. Its a world all its own. The rainbow was chosen as this years theme to symbolize hope and tranquility as the world around us changes. The gardens plantings are patterned after that familiar color spectrum. This year, the blooming columns were constructed to add vertical dimension and invoke intrigue. The path that winds between the columns was intentionally placed to invite visitors to become one with the garden and take a moment to enjoy nature. The following plants have been selected by the industry for their outstanding performance and showy blooms: The AAS Gold Medal Winner for 2003 is the Purple Majesty Millet The AAS winner for 2003 is the Gaillardia Sundance Bicolor, Dianthus Corona Cherry Magic, Petunia Wave Blue, and Rudbeckia Prairie Sun. The Perennial Plant Association has chosen the Shasta Daisy Becky as its 2003 Perennial Plant of the Year because of its bright white flowers that attract butterflies and long lasting blooms. Several new Sweet Williams have appeared on the market: Amazon Neon, Amazon Neon Cherry, Amazon Neon Purple, and Amazon Rose Magic. They come in a variety of brilliant colors and bloom the first year from seed, making them wonderful cut flowers. Another highlight in the garden is an old familiar flower that has been hybridized into several new and exciting forms. It is the Petunia! The vast array of colors and plant types offered has made this plant popular again: Grandifloras have very large showy flowers. Millifloras have very small flowers on a compact plant. Multifloras are more vigorous than the grandiflora types. They produce medium sized flowers in great quantities. Among this group are the Wave types, which are extremely vigorous low growers. At this time, we would like to direct your attention to a few things that will assist you in understanding our labeling system. All the plants are labeled with both common and botanical names and are listed in this guide. The annuals are marked with white signs and organized in the guide by their common names. The perennials are marked with black signs and are listed by their scientific names. Since our garden is designed to be an ever-changing display as the season progresses, come often and enjoy the vast array of plants suited to our Indiana climate.

Annual Flowers
Annual plants are those that complete their life cycle in one year and therefore do not come back the next season. They are used in many situations for their wide color availability and can be planted amongst perennials to give color all season long. Our collection includes many common, well-known species grown for the use of the Herbaceous Landscape Plants class taught every fall. Also, in the bed column, plants with a "T" beside the number are being grown in the towers, and those with a "C" are located in containers.

Perennial Flowers
As you tour the garden the plants with the large black signs are plants that will persist for more than one year. The following is a list of those plants and is alphabetized according to their botanical names. If you find a plant growing in the garden, cross-reference it by using the name at the bottom of the sign. For your information, we have indicated the growth cycle of each plant in the column labeled 'group', using the following abbreviations: P=Perennial (a plant that continues to grow and flower for several to many years); TP=Tender Perennial (a perennial that is at the edge of its hardiness zone and needs winter protection); B=Biennial (a plant that generally does not produce flowers until the second year of growth, after which it dies); TB=Tender Bulb (a plant that grows from an underground storage structure (root, bulb, corm, etc.) and must be dug and stored in a frost-free area during winter); SSA=Self-Seeding Annual (an annual plant that reseeds readily thus producing a new crop of seedlings every year).

==================================================== A special thank you to Daisy Hinkle Garton for the establishment and support of the Henry Ernest Hinkle Memorial Endowment Fund. The fund provides financial support for a horticulture garden internship to be awarded yearly. The internship not only provides financial assistance for a student, it gives the student valuable practical experience in the care and maintenance of ornamental plants. ==================================================== We need your help to do a better job of meeting your informational needs! Please send us any comments, questions, or suggestions you might have about the current garden or for future displays. Sincerely,

Horticulture is both a science and an art.

The Purdue University Horticulture Gardens have been demonstrating this to students and visitors since 1982. The gardens are a living classroom. They instruct Purdue Horticulture students in ways no books or lectures can, provide hands-on training in garden maintenance for student workers and volunteers, and teach visitors about garden plants and techniques. The gardens are also a quiet pocket of repose on the busy West Lafayette campus, offering as much for the senses as for the mind. In just under half an acre, the gardens display a wide diversity of plants, including over 200 cultivars of annuals and nearly 300 species of perennial flowers and foliage plants. Special collections include daylilies, iris, spring-flowering bulbs, ferns, ornamental grasses, hostas, and peonies. Located adjacent to the Horticulture Building at Marstellar Street and the Agricultural Mall, the gardens are open year-round, seven days a week. You'll find self-guided tour brochures when you visit, or you can request one by mail. You can also arrange for guided group tours.

We invite you to visit and become a Friend of the Garden

Become a 'Friend.' Support the activities and continued development of the Purdue University Horticulture Gardens through your tax deductible contribution to the Purdue Foundation. All of our 'Friends' receive a garden guide each spring, an invitation to special events such as the Purdue Garden Day open house, and the satisfaction of helping the gardens grow.
