Blue Fescue, Sheep Fescue
Festuca ovina

Tight clumps of blue-green to blue-gray leaves. Nice for borders or as an accent plant as it does not spread by runners, it is effective when massed on slopes or level ground. Foliage is fine and thin. Color may vary as there are numerous cultivars and can depend on exposure. Our native variety is Festuca ovina var. brachyphylla. Clumps often tend to become lopsided or die out in spots. You can correct this problem by dividing the dead part and replanting the living part of the clump. Responds to annual fertilization, set 6 to 15 inches apart in the landscape, will rot if kept too moist. Shear down to a few inches above the ground in early spring to renew foliage. Synonym: Festuca glauca.
