The musician, who died of a heroin overdose, was filmed wearing the garment during shooting of the band's mockumentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

The shirt, emblazoned with a swastika, was designed by Malcolm McLaren, the punk group's former manager who died earlier this year.

Vicious, provoked outrage by sporting it for the movie in 1978 – a year before he died aged 21.

Helen Hall, a memorabilia dealer who is selling the item on behalf of a private vendor, said: "This iconic piece of clothing is one of the most memorable worn by Sid Vicious.

"It sums up everything that punk and the Sex Pistols stood for: rebellion, controversy and provocation."

Vicious – who was born John Ritchie – courted controversy during his troubled and brief period in the public gaze after joining the band in 1977.

Inspiring a generation of music fans through his stinging tirades against the establishment and foul language, McLaren once claimed that if Johnny Rotten, the group's singer, was the voice of punk, "then Vicious is the attitude".

Vicious was arrested in New York in 1978 and charged with murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen after she was found stabbed to death on the bathroom floor of their hotel room.

He attempted suicide and later that year was jailed following his arrest for an assault.

Despite having kicked his heroin addiction during his stint in prison, he overdosed at a party to celebrate his release after obtaining bail.
