Toad Lilies are strong growing plants with masses of orchid like flowers. The blooms form at the tips of the upright stems over a long period from summer to autumn.
Creeping Toad Lily gets its name as it is a rhizomatous perennial that spreads or 'creeps' with underground stolons. It does this at a moderate pace and is not invasive. It will slowly form a healthy clump.
The leaves spread up the stems in an attractive fashion.
Toad Lilies are a woodland plants that require a humus rich, moist but well drained soil in semi shade to filtered light. Water to establish and keep moist during active growth – they don’t like to dry out. Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
Whilst Toad Lilies or Tricyrtis sp. look like Orchids, they are in the Lily family. This one is native to Taiwan.
It is variably suggested they are commonly known as Toad Lilies because they like to grow where Toads live; or because they are spotted like toads; or because of their lumpy nectaries.
