Blackburn Rovers have made their third signing of the summer, bringing in the former Portugal striker Nuno Gomes on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old, who was released by Sporting Braga at the end of last season, joins the midfielder Danny Murphy and striker Leon Best in joining Rovers, after receiving international clearance. He has a two-year deal at the Championship club.

Gomes made 79 appearances for his country, scoring 29 goals, including seven at major tournaments. He peaked at international level with four goals at Euro 2000 as Portugal reached the semi-finals.

Gomes played for Boavista and Benfica before earning a €17m move to Fiorentina. He later returned to Benfica before joining Braga, scoring six times in 20 appearances last season.
