SPRING BLOOMS — The Corneille Bryan Native Garden at Lake Junaluska will host wildflower walks at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, March 27-May 8.
Witness spring wildflowers come into bloom at the Corneille Bryan Native Garden, a hidden gem tucked into a hillside cove at Lake Junaluska, with weekly guided wildflower walks.
A meandering woodland path winds and weaves through the shady gardens, offering a quiet respite for people and a repository for native plants. The garden brims with 500 species of native plants, flower and trees.
See the spring wildflowers in bloom with guided wildflower walks at 1 p.m. every Wednesday from March 27 through May 8. Different wildflowers will be blooming each week as spring unfolds — including trout lily, bloodroot, trilliums, Virginia bluebells, Jacob’s ladder, woodland phlox and many more.
Each walk lasts about one hour and is led by experienced volunteers. The week of April 10, the wildflower walk will be held on Friday, April 12, instead of Wednesday.
Register for a specific walk by emailing CBnativegarden@gmail.com. Meet at the bottom of the garden off Stuart Circle. In the event of inclement weather, the walk will not be held.
Bird walks
The Corneille Bryan Native Garden is a welcome haven for birdlife. A special guided walk for bird lovers will be held at 7:30 a.m. Fridays, April 26 and May 17. Join local birding expert Howard Browers on the “Birds in the Garden” walk to learn about native and migratory birds.
About the garden
The garden entrance is tucked away off Stuart Circle, on the same side of the lake as the rose walk. It was created in memory of Corneille Downer Bryan, the wife of Bishop Monk Bryan who served as Nebraska Area bishop of The United Methodist Church from 1976-1984.
Plants include mature oaks, black walnuts, sourwood and magnolias along with an understory of silverbell, azaleas, hawthorn and others.
The garden may be explored on your own at any time. For questions, call 828-452-5840 or email CBnativegarden@gmail.com.
