Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’, commonly known as Bugleweed, Common Bugle, or Carpet Bugle, is an herbaceous perennial grown for both its foliage and impressive flowers. This Ajuga forms a mat of glossy, burgundy leaves as it grows to 25 cm tall and 80 cm wide. In spring, stems carrying showy clusters of deep blue flowers rise above the foliage and literally transform the plant. This Common Bugle is a great plant for shady conditions though it will grow more vigorously when planted in full sun and leaf colouring will be more intense. It is also tolerant of dry periods, moderate frost, coastal environments, and cool climates. Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ is commonly used as a ground cover, planted around the base of larger tree and shrubs, used in shaded areas, added to cottage gardens, or maintained in a container.
