“Aurea” is a popular shrub due to its striking, yellow foliage and ease to grow. The leaves on this deciduous plant have a “fresh” and vibrant appeal. As autumn progresses they turn shades of orange, yellow and red before falling. Tiny, pale yellow flowers are produced in spring and often result in bright red berries during winter which attract birds. It typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, cool climates, frost of most soil conditions, except extreme wet or dry. This Berberis is commonly used for hedging, added to a mixed planting, or used to brighten a dull area. The thorns make it ideal for blocking thoroughfares and trimmed plants will form a dense, impenetrable, yet attractive hedge. For hedging space plants 50 cm apart.
