“Souvenir de Louis Spaeth” is a deciduous shrub grown for its showy and perfumed flowers. Purple buds open through late spring and summer to reveal clusters of the single, dark pink blooms which are both stunning and great for attracting butterflies. The foliage comprises dark green, heart-shaped leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows upright with a somewhat loose habit to about 2.5 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of light shade, short periods of dry, frost, and cool climates. “Souvenir de Louis Spaeth” is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in cottage gardens, or grown as a flowering hedge.
