“Fastigata” is a variety of the Common Hornbeam and is grown for its foliage, form, and interesting catkins. The leaves on this deciduous tree are dark green with conspicuous ribs and a serrated edge. As autumn progresses they turn lovely shades of yellow before falling. Flowers in spring develop into catkins that hang among the leaves and provide additional interest to this tree. This Hornbeam grows with a conical shape to about 12 m tall and 6 m wide though can be trimmed as necessary. It grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site and is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods. “Fastigata” is a great variety for hedging, growing as a specimen, adding to mixed plantings, or for avenue planting. It also suits being used to provide shelter and screening.
