“Dawyck Gold” is a variety of European Beech which is grown for its bright autumn colours and slender growth habit. The foliage emerges bright yellow with green overtones in spring, ages to become a rich, lime green colour, then develops golden-orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and almost columnar shape to about 12 m tall and 3 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods. It will also tolerate moderate wind, though shelter and staking when young will help produce a better formed tree. This is a fantastic tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
