Almost eight decades have passed, but Josef Lewkowicz can vividly recall the day, shortly after the end of the Second World War, when he tracked down the Nazi concentration camp commandant who had once terrorised him and left him for dead.

“I can remember the moment as if it is in front of my eyes,” he says. “I found him lying on the ground like a dog. I approached him and couldn’t believe that our situations were reversed. I thanked God that this moment had come and I could catch the murderer.”

The man Lewkowicz describes as a “monster” was Amon Goeth, the notorious “Butcher of Plaszow,” who was made famous by Ralph Fiennes’s portrayal of him in Schindler’s List.
