Description

A quintessential cottage garden staple, Penstemon 'Alice Hindley' boasts mauve tubular flowers suffused with lilac and pale pink, the throats white inside. Produced all summer and well into autumn, the exquisite pastel blooms are held above attractive, glossy, spear-shaped semi-evergreen foliage. This hardy and reliable penstemon associates beautifully with ornamental grasses, echinacea and hardy geraniums. Height: 100cm (39in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

Penstemons are invaluable plants for the front of the border. These are generous perennials, putting on a non-stop performance for little work aside from dead-heading, and after their main summer flush they will often stretch themselves with subsequent blooms deep into autumn. Not only are they one of the longest-flowering perennials available, but they come in an infinite number of varieties and the colour range is vast. From luxurious purples and daring reds to luminous cools blues and creams – there is a penstemon out there for every taste. Penstemon flowers are rich in pollen and nectar and provide plenty of food for pollinating insects, making them not only gorgeous to look at but excellent for wildlife too.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow penstemon in a sunny or semi shaded position on fertile, well drained soil. Penstemons can tolerate dry soils once established but dislike heavy soils that are particularly cold and wet in winter. Improve heavy soils by adding plenty of coarse grit prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Once established they are reasonably tolerant of drought and will require little maintenance. Deadhead faded penstemon flowers to maintain the plant’s vigour and encourage further blooms to be produced. In cold areas apply a dry mulch of bark chips of straw around the crown of each plant in autumn. Leave the old foliage intact until spring to protect plants during winter.
