A bright and zingy addition to the spring garden, Chaenomeles x superba 'Elly Mossel' erupts with vibrant scarlet red flowers, just as the leaves emerge in March. These pretty blossoms are followed by green apple-like fruits which turn golden as autumn approaches and have a delicate sweet aroma. Although unpalatable raw, the fruits of Japanese quince are tasty when cooked and make a delicious jam. This Flowering Quince forms a neat rounded shrub which works wonderfully in mixed borders, cottage gardens and woodland gardens or alternatively it can be trained as a wall shrub. The blooms are also a great early source of nectar for bees. Height: 1.2m (4'). Spread: 2m (6.5').
