An appealing shrub for gardeners looking for a plant with interesting and light coloured foliage, to fill a gap in a large garden border. Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' or European red elder, has bright yellow-green, feathery leaves, that contrast wonderfully when planted alongside shrubs with dark green foliage. This Elder can grow fine in all types of soil, but prefers it to be well drained and moist. In late summer it will produce conical heads of creamy white flowers, followed by elder berries. Sambucus plants thrive on any moist but well drained soil, even coping in shallow, chalky conditions. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade.
Feed and water Elder plants until well established. Sambucus requires little maintenance but may be pruned in spring to restrict its size to the space available. If necessary, Elder plants will respond well to hard pruning, which promotes plenty of fresh growth.
