Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Columnaris' Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Columnaris'

This Chamaecyparis can grow to a medium-size tree with a columnar crown, 5 - 10 m tall. In culture it is one of the most popular conifers for use as a hedge plant. The naturally small habit makes the ‘Columnaris’ suitable for that purpose. Although the tree can tolerate pruning well, it must not be pruned back to the old wood as the branches will no longer sprout. The bark is reddish brown and peels in long fibrous plates when mature. The young twigs are brown and flattened. The foliage is blue-green and soft-blue frosted. The twigs have some twists in the branching, an important difference with ‘Alumni’ which has the same colour foliage, but whose twigs are always in one plane. Grows on any soil provided it is humic and well drained. Cannot tolerate lime.
