Происхождение
Grote zuilvormige tot smal piramidale conifeer met een dichte vertakking, die gemakkelijk kan uitgroeien tot een boom van 15 tot 30 m hoogte. De bast is roodbruin en laat op latere leeftijd los in lange, vezelachtige platen. De jonge twijgen zijn eerst groengeel, later licht roodbruin. Het loof is dof middengroen. De boom groeit op alle gronden, mits goed doorlatend en voldoende vochtig, en verdraagt ook veel wind. Ze behoort, naast verschillende cultivars van Chamaecyparis lawsoniana en Thuja, tot de meest populaire haagplanten. De van nature smalle habitus is een voordeel bij het gebruik als haag en daarbij is de boom zeer goed te snoeien. Vanwege de krachtige groei moet er twee keer per jaar worden gesnoeid en dan ontstaat een zeer dichte haag. De boom ontstond in 1888 uit een kruising tussen Chamaecyparis nootkatensis en Cupressus macrocarpa. Nieuwe inzichten leidden ertoe dat C. nootkatensis in een ander geslacht werd ingedeeld (Xanthocyparis). Dit had tot gevolg dat de hybridesoo
