Who is Huang Yong Ping, the artist behind Monumenta 2016?
The Grand Palais’ unmissable annual event Monumenta, where a contemporary artist sets up an extraordinary work of art under the glass roof of the Grand Palais, will this year play host to the work of Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping.
1/10Huang Yong Ping moved to France in 1989 from the coastal province of Fujian in his native China, just after the Tiananmen Square massacre. Having been limited by Chinese censorship, he exhibited his work for the first time at the Centre Georges Pompidou, which was opening its doors to art from all over the world with “Les Magiciens de la terre”. Although still unknown to the public, the artist represented France at the 48th Venice Bienniale in 1999, standing out from the crowd with his monumental works in which he uses animal scupltures and taxidermy in a fantastical way like his giant octopus at Musée de l’Océanographie in Monaco, his Noah’s ark at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, or his apocalyptic vision at the Bugarach exhibition. While last year’s event did not meet the success it had hoped for with Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, after Daniel Buren and Anish Kapoor, his work promises to stun the public and fans of contemporary art at the now biennial Monumenta.
