Three years after revealing her diagnosis of breast cancer, and two years after undergoing a mastectomy, 90210 actress Shannen Doherty revealed on Instagram that she has undergone breast reconstruction surgery.
On Sunday, Shannen shared a sweet photo from her hospital bed, with her mother, Rosa, by her side. “Happy Mother’s Day, mom. I only bring you to the best places…hospital food, yum,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for always being there. I’d write more but the pain pills are kicking in.” She added the hashtag #reconstruction.
Shannen has been open with fans about her cancer treatment, sharing photos of radiation therapy and the emotional process of shaving her head, and her reconstruction process appears to be no different.
Earlier in the week, Shannen shared a picture of her surgeon, Jay Orringer, M.D., and his wife, Jolene. “This man is performing surgery on me this week so dinner felt like a good call,” she wrote. Previously, she worked with Orringer to use expanders to prepare her body for reconstructive surgery, according to Redbook.
She also posted a photo of herself banking blood for the procedure and thanked her technician, Mars P, and all those who donate blood. “To say I’m moved by the generosity of people is an understatement,” she wrote. “I’m vowing that as long as I’m cleared in the future, I will start donating.”
"I think what's beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down, and builds you, and tears you down, and builds you, and it remakes you so many different times,” Shannen told Chelsea Handler on her Netflix show. “So the person that I thought I was supposed to be, or was going to be, or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different. And I realized, wow, I thought I was so brave and so gracious this entire time, but really I was just hiding."
